We continued mossing and commenced
wall on starboard side of deck - Removed
the snow melter for repairs. It smokes
and leaks intolerable odours.

Our scanty force - now but six
operatives - some scarcely worthy of this
tiller - are [breaking?] out the hold for
our attempt to left the vessel and
[sling?] her upon the ice - During the
low springs she pounds forward

Sent Mr McGeary and William
Morton with the day team to Esquimaux
Point in search of stolen property and
on a tour of [espinoza?] with regards
to the anxiously regarded Iron
Boat. From the manner with whi[ch?]
the Esquimaux have dogged and
watched our parties there can be no
doubt - but that they will find our
Depot unless the goods are care=
fully cached. I confess I fear for
this - the selfishness of the withdrawers
has shown itself so often and in such
a [unclear] of little things that I am not
encouraged as to their respect for our
interests when they reach this important
station.

A gale outside and heavy
flakes of snow fell falling around the brig
“Henry Grinnell” expands to the
storm and shines out as flat and
as coloured as a well stretched trans=
