Nanking, China Oct. 19. 1899

[right page] Oct 19. Thurs.

Today was my Grammar examination day. I had it. Anna is sick today so I could not pratice my music.

We had chinese rice today as usual. We had chinese rice.

This evening Mother and I went to the flower garden over the hill from Arabia and bought seven pots of flowers , "crysanthemums".

Papa and Mother have gone over to Miss Shaw's for supper. Miss Shaw lives next door to us. We have a fire in our grate. It is cold.

We had the tai tais here today. Mrs. Little wanted to talk to them about foot binding.

Had a very succesful meeting. Clear forgot my history lesson this afternoon. I ought to have gone at a quarter past three.

I was so sorry.

Today our American Minister Mr. Conger came to Nanking. Father, Merres. Malone Meigs and Seamon went to meet him. He came on the Monococy. He stayed at our house. Mother used to know him in America. Mother's father knew him well. There was a reception for him this evening at the Ina Kerage. George was sick so he could not go.

We had a lovely reception.
