Fragment of a Carolingian compilation on the Psalms

Description
This leaf is one of two Stanford-owned leaves originating from the same dispersed book. The texts on the two leaves appear to have been compiled as prefatory matter, either before a commentary or preceding a Psalter. They include a hitherto unrecorded commentary on the Psalms, apparently of Carolingian authorship, and an early appearance of a prologue attributed to Bede, or pesudo-Bede. This leaf contains 4 sequential texts. Text 1 begins (mid-word) "-brius succidatur. Unde consueta" and ends "de purissimo fonte potare" : identified as part of Jerome's preface to the 'Hebrew Psalter,' Patrologia Latina 29, cols 118-120. Text 2 begins "Dum multa corpora liborum" and ends "per bonefacium presbiterum heirosolima": identified as Letter 5 of Pseudo-Damasus to Jerome, Patrologia Latina 13, col. 440. Text 3 begins "Beatissimo pape damaso sedix apostolicae hieronomus simplex. Legi litteras" and ends (on verso) "laudis semper canatur": identified as Ep. XLVII, Letter of Pseudo-Jerome to Pope Damasus, Patrologia Latina, 30 cols. 294-5. Text 4 begins on the first leaf with "David filius iesse cum esset in regno suo." The text is from a commentary on the pslams and continues on the second leaf but the text is non-continuous." See also M0389. Box 1, Folder 02, Item 2.

Description: 10th-11th c.
Description: The fragment was once used in a binding, possibly from a book owned by an Oxford College (see F. Madden's account of the source of Bliss's collection, Oxford Bibliographical Society III (1933)p. 188). The earliest known owner is Dr. Bliss of St. John's College, Oxford. This fragment was probably sold August 31, 1858 to Thompson and aquired from him by Thomas Phillips, where it is probably identified with MS No.18133. It was sold at the Phillips sale April 24, 1911, probably as Lot 390 as one of 327 fragments bought by E.H. Dring. It is not among those fragments possessing Oxford shelfmarks identified by Neil Ker. Oxford antiquary Philip Bliss (1787-1857) was one of the first collectors to recognize the historical and cultural importance of medieval manuscript fragments. These books survived intact in England until ca. 1520-70 at which time, particularly in Oxford and Cambridge, they were taken to pieces for use by binders as pastedowns, wrappers, fly leaves, and reinforcing strips.
Description: Fragments in this collection were purchased by Stanford in 1984 and 1985.
