190 From Rome to Naples.

-------- Fluctuquw Sonorum
Vulturnum ------------------------
Sil. It. L. 8.

The rough Vulturnus, furious in its
Course,
With rapid Streams divides the fruitful
Grounds,
And from afar in hollow Murmurs
sounds.

The Ruins of Anxur and old Capua
show us the pleasant Situation in which
those Towns formerly stood. The
first of them was planted on the Moun-
tain, where we now see Terracina, and
by reason of the Breezes that came
off the Sea, and the Height of its Situa-
tion, was one of the Summer Retire-
ments of the ancient Romans.

O Nemus, O fontes! Solidumque maden-
tis arenae
Littus, & aequoreis Splendidus Anxur
aquis!
Mar. L. 10.
