The Archive is deemed the most va-
luable in all Italy, being possessed
of numberless Diplomas & Privileges, &
many authentic Instruments from the
Time of the Abbot Bestharius. The
Abbot of this Monastery had a Power
of creating as many Nobles, as he plea-
sed, from among his subjects; & of
choosing Protorotaries, & other civil
Officers, & likewise of raising an Army;
& he had a Right also to confiscate the
Goods of any of his Subjects, who were
guilty of Crimes.

This Monastery of the Benedictines is
within a Day's Journey from Naples,
subject to the Archbishoprie of Salerno
There are but few MSS. in the Library.
