fall on him. He was trying to get onto the roof, he was not trying to jump to the ground.

As I recall the Mexican was a Director of Cities Service. He had a daughter who attended Stanford in 1941. As I remember her, she was either a sophomore or junior in the 1941-1942 school year.

Good luck in your search,

E. N. Squire '42 Box 120 R D #2 Glenn Mills, Penna. 19342

P.S. If I recall the Mexican's name, I'll forward it to you. When you find it would you please send it to me. Thanks.

After a night's sleep the name of GARFIAS comes to my mind. You may have either this name in the Stanford files or a name which is spelled differently but is phonetically the same.

Dear Mr. Jacobson,

About the Wentz episode my brother Morris P. {caret: "(Nick)"} Bryan of Pacific Grove California writes he met you in 1941 at his 50th Reunion – the President's Luncheon. He says he was at Encina when the incident occurred and was in April 1906 but was concerned with the area where a chimney fell through killing one student.

I enclose his letteer. The Wentz matter is discussed on Page 2. The name of a classmete of mine "Johnny Fitting" came to my mind, but I did not mention him because I thought he would not have been there either. R. U. Fitting whom my brother mentions may have been an older brother. I hope the lead he has may be helpful to you.

Perhaps you can conveniently supply him with a copy of the October 1967 Stanford Alumni Almanac and get him on their list.

Dear Mr. Bryan:

Thank you for your letter regarding John Bryan, Deceased.

Our papers do not show any such information as the name of the Father and Mother is listed as Unknown. We have other way of checking the relatives names.

If you still want the papers, we will be glad to send them upon receipt of the $8.00 Document Fee.

Sincerely,

Dear Sam,

I wrote these people that if their records showed that their John's father was named John and he had a brother in Maryland named Richard, that I would be interested, as I was direct descendant of Richard. The above seems to end the matter, at least as far as I am concerned.

The Stanford Publications seem reluctant to get my new address on their records, so I

{inserted above the salutation: "P.S. You had already told me of your double vision & I think you are wise in using every precaution. I have, as I think I told you, quit driving on my 84th birthday. Drives lost their interest when my Josephine left me and I am adjusting very well. You can slow up your physical activities without slowing your mental and spiritual joys of life.

I continue to do what I am sure Josephine would have me do.

Shall write further soon,

Nick"}

have not yet been able to get the Oct '67 Almanac & none of the Stanford people here have it. If you are thru with your copy I would be pleased to have it.

Regarding Evan Wentz – I lived on opposite end of Encina & was concerned with the fellows in the area where chimney fell through One fellow, [Hanna?], was killed there.

As I remember the Wentz episode – He figured if he could get on the roof that his chances would be a lot better. His hold on the gutter was his first effort in that direction. I thnk no one man could be the "hero", for as I remember, his perdicament was seen by those getting out of the back door on that end of the hall. Some staid right there and encouraged Wentz to hold on and that boys were on their way up to help him. My recollection is that R. U. Fitting {caret: '1906 – Elec Eng."} was one of the first to get to his room. If he was not the one who got hold of Wentz, I think, if he is still alive, can clear it all up. His son – R. U. Jr – 1932 might recall his fathers story about it.

I met Jacobson in 1941 when we were at the 50th Reunion & he invited us along with Jack & Gretchen to go to the President's Luncheon. I have had no word from Jacobson, so if you wish, you can pass this along to him in your own way. Love to you both. Nick

Dear Mr. Jacobson:

While glancing through the letters to the editors, I was very surprised to come across the name of my deceased uncle, Robert Brooke. Apparently, he was the roommate of Walter Evans-Wentz, and perhaps, the person who rescued him from the ledge. I missed the October Almanac, so did not see the original article about this event. I know nothing about the story, but can furnish you with the names of several people who might have further information about this. Robert also had three sisters who have exellent memories and may well recall this event so I suggest that you contact them. Listed below are the names and addresses:

Mr. Philip S. Brooks

604 West 19th Avenue

Spokane, Washington

Miss Rebecca Brooke

2815 Boylston Avenue East

Seattle, Washington 98102

Miss Mary Brooke

2815 Boylston Avenue East

Seattle, Washington 98102

Mrs. Russell Burton

2331 McGilvra Blvd.

Seattle, Washington 98102

Robert Brooke returned to Spokand after graduation from Stanford and went to work in his father's bank. He died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. He was unmarried. Since he died before I was born, my knowledge of him is sketchy. However, I am sure the above mentioned people would be very glad to give you more information.
