Description

George Loomis (1817-1894) co-founded the town of Northfield, MN, in 1855 with his brother-in-law, John Wesley North. He moved to California and owned a large dry-goods store. In 1879, Loomis along with two partners, including another brother-in-law, Charles Norton Felton, were co-founders of Pacific Coast Oil which after numerous mergers, antitrust splits, renamings, etc. is known as Chevron Corporation. Loomis married Catherine "Kate" Ashley (1835-1900) of Syracuse, N.Y., in 1856. They lived in San Francisco and also lived at Felton Gables in Menlo Park, the family home of Kate's sister Charlotte and Charles N. Felton. In later years they frequently stayed at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
