Grace T. (Henderson) Mathewson married Thomas S. Mathewson on Sept. 23, 1892. They lived in Fruitvale (now Oakland). Grace sued for divorce in 1896 on grounds of desertion. She was said to have a beautiful soprano voice and moved to New York to pursue a musical career but lost her voice after a severe cold, temporarily relocated to Colorado, and finally landed in Los Angeles where she made a career as a music critic, composed music for theater and in 1915 published a book "Silent Forces". Grace's daughter Ruth M. Mathewson (1893-1959), mentioned in her condolence letter, was born on June 20, 1893, the day before Leland Stanford died.
