D. O. Mills

Darius Ogden Mills (1825-1910) came to California in 1848 after the discovery of gold and established a general store in Sacramento. His success led to founding a bank, D. O. Mills and Co. In 1864 he moved to San Francisco and was cofounder of the Bank of California and served as its first President. After resigning and then resuming as President he eventually returned to his home state of New York in 1878. Mills' California estate later became the site of the town of Millbrae, named for Mills.
