Mary Harriman

Mary Harriman Rumsey (1881-1934), founder of the Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements in 1901, while a student at Barnard College. Daughter of railroad executive Edward Henry Harriman, who became president of both the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. E.H. Harriman's bout with appendicitis was reported in the May 17, 1903 issue of the New York Times.
