C. H. Gilbert

Charles Henry Gilbert (1859-1928) was a student of David Starr Jordan, first in high school in Indianapolis, then as an undergraduate at Butler University, and finally at Indiana University where he received a PhD in 1883. Gilbert held professorships at Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati in Natural History before being hired by Jordan to join the founding faculty at Stanford University as Chairman of the Department of Zoology in 1891. Gilbert continued as head of the Zoology department until 1925 when he became an emeritus professor. His specialty was icthyology in which he had a long-time collaboration with Jordan. The Biological Sciences building at Stanford bears his name.
