Joseph Swain

Joseph Swain (1857-1927) had been educated at Indiana University and was a Professor of Mathematics and Biology there from 1883 until 1891 when he was lured by his mentor and IU President, David Starr Jordan, to become Professor of Mathematics at Stanford. Swain's wife, Frances Hannah (Morgan) Swain (1860-1936) had completed two years at Indiana University and also transferred to Stanford to complete her A.B. with Honors in Mathematics in 1893. In 1893 Joseph was recalled to Indiana University to become President and remained until 1901 when he accepted the position of President of Swarthmore College and held that office from 1902 until his retirement in 1921.
