George E. Crothers

George Edward Crothers (1870-1957) was a member of the Pioneer Class at Stanford, A.B. History '95, A.M. '96. He was the first alumnus to serve on the Stanford Board of Trustees, from 1902 to 1912, and was the Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the Board from 1902 to 1908. Crothers became a lawyer and advised Jane Lathrop Stanford, helping to correct legal defects in the University's founding grant. He served as Superior Court Judge from 1913 to 1921 and returned to private practice afterward. He donated two buildings to Stanford, Crothers Hall which opened in 1948, and Crothers Memorial Hall, in memory of his mother, which opened in 1955.
