Grace Greenwood

Grace Greenwood was the pseudonym used by the prolific American author Sara Jane (Clarke) Lippincott (1823-1904). She was raised in New York state and Pennsylvania and began submitting her poetry and children's stories to magazines and newspapers at age 16 and started using the pseudonym Grace Greenwood in 1845 or 1846. She married Leander K. Lippincott, a newspaper correspondent, in 1853 and they had one child, a daughter Annie Grace, in 1856. Sara became involved in the women's rights movement and many of her writings reflected her interest in it. Her husband left the U.S. in 1876 to escape charges of government fraud, abandoning Sara. She and Annie moved to London for a number of years and returned to the U.S., living on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. in the 1890's. Sara later moved to New Rochelle, NY, where she lived the rest of her life.
