H H Markham

Henry Harrison Markham (1840-1923) was Governor of California at the time Stanford University first opened and when Leland Stanford died. Markham was born in New York state, moved to Wisconsin where he enlisted during the Civil War and rose to the rank of second lieutenant, then returned to Wisconsin to study law. He passed the Wisconsin bar in 1867, practiced in Milwaukee until 1869 when he and his family moved to Pasadena. He practiced law there, was on the school board, served one term as U.S. Representative from California (1885-1887), and one term as California Governor (1891-1895).
