Judge HarlanJohn Marshall Harlan (1833-1911) was a lawyer from Kentucky who served as Attorney General of Kentucky from 1863 to 1867. He was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Rutherford B. Hayes and served on the court from 1877 until his death in 1911. In 1896 Harlan delivered the opinion of the court in the case U S v. Stanford that affirmed that the stockholders of the Central Pacific Railroad were not liable for the unpaid government bond debt of the company, thus making the assets that had been denied to Jane Stanford through the duration of the lawsuit to be once more available to her to provide funding to Stanford University and to be willed to its endowment.
