Mr BlaineJames Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893) was a politician from Maine who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876 and was Speaker of the House from 1869 to 1875. He was elected to represent Maine in the U.S. Senate, serving from 1876 to 1881 when he was appointed U.S. Secretary of State by President James A. Garfield. He served less than a year due to Garfield's assassination, resigning shortly after Chester Alan Arthur became President. In 1884 Blaine received the Republican nomination for President but was defeated by Grover Cleveland in the general election. Blaine was again appointed U.S. Secretary of State by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889 and served until mid-1892 when he resigned due to declining health.
