J. G. CarlisleJohn Griffin Carlisle (1834-1910), lawyer and politician, US Representative (1876-1890) and Senator (1890-1893) from Kentucky, and US Secretary of the Treasury (1893-1897).
John Griffin Carlisle (1834-1910) was a politician from Kentucky. He was Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1871 to 1875. He was then elected to the House of Representatives, serving from 1877 to 1890 and was Speaker of the House from 1883 to 1889. In 1890 Carlisle was appointed as U.S. Senator from Kentucky to complete the term of James B. Beck, who died in office. He was nominated as Secretary of the Treasury by Grover Cleveland and resigned from the Senate to begin serving in the Cabinet. Carlisle was replaced in the Cabinet when Cleveland's term ended and he fell out of grace in Kentucky due to perceived mismanagement of the Treasury during the Panic of 1893. He moved from Kentucky to New York City to practice law.
