J McKenna

Joseph McKenna (1843-1926) was a California lawyer, politician and jurist. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served from 1885 to 1892. In 1892 he was nominated to serve as a judge of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by President Benjamin Harrison, serving until 1897. President William McKinley nominated McKenna as U.S. Attorney General, serving for less than a year before McKinley nominated him to the U.S. Supreme Court where he served as Associate Justice from 1898 to 1925. McKenna was the judge who was supposed to hear the U.S. vs. Stanford case that threatened the estate of Leland Stanford but recused himself from the case as he was a close friend of the Stanfords.
