D. H. Temple

Reverend Daniel Herbert Temple (1822-1897) was born in Valetta, Malta, where his father was a missionary, growing up overseas and studying in Smyrna, Asia Minor (Turkey). After moving to the U.S. in 1840 he graduated from Amherst College in 1843, taught and was principal at several schools in Massachusetts, and was licensed to preach in 1848 after attending Andover Theological Seminary. He married Louisa Maria Newlin (1823-1865) in 1849 and held teaching and pastoral positions in several Illinois communities until 1863, moving to Brooklyn, then to Bloomfield, New Jersey, where Louisa died after being in ill health for several years. Daniel became a businessman, getting involved in oil properties, railroads, and Wells Fargo. In 1872 he married Mary Hubbard Turrill (1839-1916), daughter of Joel Turrill (1794-1859), former U.S. Representative from New York and consul to the Kingdom of Hawaii. In 1872 Daniel and his family moved to San Francisco, where he was minister at several Presbyterian churches and also taught private school from 1881 to 1883 in Menlo Park, including Leland Stanford Jr. as a private student. In 1884 he retired to Los Gatos and later taught English and Latin at Los Gatos High School from 1893 to 1895. In addition to two sons from his first marriage, Daniel and Mary had a daughter, Grace Douglas Temple (1877-1973) who matriculated at Stanford University in 1894 and earned her A.B. in Latin in 1898.
