San Francisco Aug 14, 1893

Mrs. Senator Stanford

Dear Lady I hope you will excuse the liberty I take in writeing you these few lines I wish to extend my heart felt sympathy to you in your great trouble. I did not dare to do so at the time of your husbands death as I knew your heart was to sad to read my few lines. I saw in the papers all the telegrams you received but I think none felt for you like I did when I read in the papers all about your husbands life and all about your little boy,

but ones sorrow is such a lonely thing and a something that no one can realy share but the great giver of hope and comfort And just being a believer dear Mrs Stanford I pray that all the consolation that our heavenly Father is able to give his children in their deepest greifs may be given you and owing to the great distance I am from you I may be among the last to offer my sympathy [it overstrike] May I hope it will not seem the least sincere For from the depths of my heart I feel for you with all that feeling that can come from a woman whom the pains of great sorrow have passed over. My daughter joins with me in affectionate greetings & sincere sympathy,

Yours Most Cordially, M C Caduz

touch your heart and be my excuse for writing of matters outside your great loss. Would that I were capable of telling you how pained I am to hear of how much has seen taken out of your life and the irrepable loss to California in the death of Govnor Stanford, the void this has made in your life no words of sympathy can fill the sympathy of others is always sweet

has cast these [more?] than orphans in Mrs Bentleys hands. She is without means to give them lifes necessities. She is depriving herself of medicines and every comfort in her fast-ebbing days. For we fear her trouble is Cancer of the stomach and unless her daughter aged twenty two years can procure a position of some kind where she can assist in at least providing food for these little ones God alone knows the end, he knows if these little ones were taken from my sister and sent to an asylum that it would only hasten her death and if you can be the means dear Mrs Stanford of having my Niece Mary Bentley appointed to a position in the Mint no nobler act would be written in that list of thousands that you have already done. I came abroad last November to complete and bring out a book of useful information to European travellers that I have been thinking about for years hoping there by to better my own provincial condition & to assist my sister in this fearful load
