Vassar, Mich. Aug. 24th 1893

In Memorium [sic] - Hon. Leland Stanford, the great Philanthropist & Statesman, who fell asleep June 20th 1893.

Dread Angel, thy Summons unheralded came: At the midnight hour he heard thee calling And what was honor, or wealth or fame But as leaves in the autumn winds falling: From the sweet same world, so bright, so fair, "Caught up to meet the Lord in the air."

Not alone the lovely hills and vales Of Palo-Alto are filled with sighing: Their echoes thrill through the odorous gales Like to such minor notes, underlying The joy of earth in its blossoming time, And the Songs of Nature in wordless rhyme.

Oh, great, grand Soul; truly, there's no death For such as thee: nay, thy high endeavor Could not be quenched with the fluttering breath, But lives in the beautiful forever.

With all your sadness, I know you are happy in the thought that father and son are once more united, and are waiting together to welcome you to the Home where no hearts break and no ties sever.

"Call not back the dear departed, Anchored safe where storms are o'er, On the border land we left him, Soon to meet and part no more.

Far beyond this world of strangers, Far beyond this world of care, We shall find our missing loved one In our Father's mansion fair."

With much love and a heart full of sympathy

My dear Mrs. Stanford.

We all know that words of sympathy cannot lessen your great sorrow and suffering at a time like this, but I cannot help writing to let you know I am thinking of you and grieving for you.

Even the little I ever saw of the dear Governor, I learned to love him very much, and I only wish I had known him better, for I think he was such a great and good man that every word he
