Dear Madam
Will you deem
it an intrusion if a
"sister" from away across
the continent writes you
a word of sympathy
in this your hour of
bereavement. A few years
ago when the writer of
[left side]
threads of my life, and devote
it to her. I struggled
on until she was
raised and educated,
and you, who have been
a mother, will pardon
me if I say she was
all a mother's heart
could wish; bright
cheerful, happy-hearted
and affectionate, she
was the light of my
home and of my life,
and when at the age
of twenty-three I saw
her married to the man
of her choice, I felt that
my earthly happiness
was complete, but in
