act never paralleled in human history: and that it was done in as quiet and unostentatious way, as though it were but a common act of everyday life, added greatly to the impressiveness of the scene.

And when looking beyond you, there was seen the representation of the face and figure of the beloved son, through whose Noble Sense of the relations of wealth to humanity, and through whose truly Christian influence this work was inspired, and in whose loving memory it has been completed, one could but feel that the picture was one to be treasured in the heart forever. The far-off look upon the face of the boy Jesus to be reading in the distant future, something of the coming history of the school which his love has inspired.

The face is such a one as I had imagined belonged to the "Christ-Kind."

A portrait of your loved son should be placed over the platform in the Chapel, and under it should be written in letters of gold: "And a little Child shall lead them". For has not the Child led Father and Mother to begin and complete their grand, this noble work. Not alone the donation of certain sum of money, but the thoughtful studious care that must have been expended in bringing the Institution to its present state, must be traced to his influence.

Busy as Mr Stanford must be, with public and imperative duties, much this, Madam, must have been your work. It is the appreciation of this

fact that has led me to take the liberty of addressing this to you, rather than to Senator Stanford.

I fully realize that a stranger's hand must touch but tenderly those feelings that although we have in common, yet each treasures as sacredly his own. those whom he so dearly loved. Surely, our human affections are too sacred to be all blotted out or all swallowed up in the bright hereafter.

"A little Child shall lead them." Yes, through the influence of this University, erected to his memory, he shall continue to lead searchers after truth, not only here, but in other lands, to a deeper insight into the truths of science, a broader and truer view of the relations of man to man, and a fuller and more reverent appreciation of that Divine love that surrounds and embraces us all.

And in the generations yet to come, the weary searchers after truth,

the wise and the good, made wiser and better because of the influence hence sent forth, the countless millions made stronger and happier because of this school, shall bless the heart that inspired, the brain that planned, the hand that executed, and the energy and thrift that made possible the accomplishment of so momentous a fact as "The Leland Stanford Jr. University."

With a full heart, and in loving sympathy,

Chas. H. Allen
