Mrs. Leland Stanford.

Dear Friend

I must thank you, in writing for the distinguished honor confered upon me yesterday at the opening exercises to honor my name associated with that event, in my mind the most important event in the history of California is a greater honor than I could have expected.

In my delight I found that my voice gave promise of a return to the only work that I ever loved.

There is only one position in the world that moves my desires, namely the Chaplaincy of the Leland Stanford Junior University.---that would renew not only voice but my youth also

With much love to your good husband I remain your ardent friend

From a Professor at Berkley UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY, ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.

Berkeley, October 22, 1892

My Dear Mrs Stanford

Too busy to call in person I write to welcome you and Mr. Stanford back to California and I am sure that the good people of this state have the same feeling towards you.

A singular fact presents itself. A few years since it was difficult for one University to obtain 300 pupils: now two universities have 1200. Then the general impression was that the higher education was useless: now the impression is that it is a necessity. This marvellous change has been wrought within three years. I have discussed the cause with a number of intelligent people and they agree that the change is due more to Mr Stanfords endorsement of the higher education than to all other causes put together.

This conclusion is a just compliment to the Judgement and character of Mr Stanford and I beg you to lessen your cares by a full appreciation of this fact.

It is right to rejoice in the fruits of ones life and in this matter you have an abundant opportunity . God has been with you or this could not be. To rejoice in such blessings is to rejoice in the Lord. Please take more of this kind of comfort and encouragement. God bless you both with health, joy and peace.

Most Sincerely your friend
