ceived an answer from her husband to the effect that his wife had entered into corresponding with Mrs. Moser concerning the boy Ariel. Since then I have not heard from these people in Santa Barbara, nor from Mrs. Moser. Until I do so shall infer that all has been done that can be done, and that the result will likely turn out satisfactory to all concerned.

You speak of our having rain in California, and are anxious as to whether it has interfeared [sic] with the progress of digging for the foundation of the Museum. Since you left our rains have not been copious, and of late they have occurred mainly during the night. Sufficient has come, however, for the prospective welfare of California. The excavations for the foundation was completed prior to these late rains, and I have no doubt but that Mess. Ransome and Cushing are moving as rapidly forward with their work as it is possible for them to do. I saw Mr. Ransome last Saturday and he then informed that they had put in the entire week in preparation for work upon the Museum, getting ready rooms for boarding men, and other work preliminary to the undertaking of so large a contract. I have no doubt their work is progressing as rapidly as it is possible for them to have it.

In my last note to you I gave you the information and the correspondence that I had concerning the erection of the monument at Monterey, and enclosed a letter from the Marble Co. to me upon the subject. I hold myself in readiness at all times to comply with your wishes regarding these matters in which you have
