My dear Mrs Stanford,
I was very sorry to hear through your letter that you had been ill in Montreal & your short trip East which ought to have been beneficial turn out just the reverse.
As you may imagine I have been very busy these last few weeks over the Christmas shopping having to

get many little things for Lydia's Christmas Tree which we had in the middle of our hotel parlor here.
Some of our friends came in to see it but more especially I think to see Lydia's beaming face at the delight at so many pretty things. We had planned to spend our New Years Day at Lakewood with several of our friends but somehow it seemed hard to leave New York just now so we stayed

on here. For the last week we have had quite cold weather & snow so that yesterday we took our first sleigh ride this season which I enjoyed immensely & did not feel cold at all. Lydia looked like a little polar bear she was so enveloped in furs. We still think of taking our trip through Canada on our way home & would rather go that way than by way of Florida. I hope by this time you feel quite like yourself again &

that you will not over tax yourself at [Museen?] or elsewhere for you must take care of yourself for all our sakes & keep well & strong to go on with all the good you have started. We will probably be back in Cal the end of February to stay a little while in San Francisco before settling down for the summer at Menlo. Next fall I am in hopes we can go over to Europe but that is too far ahead to think of yet.
Lots of love from us all & best wishes for the New Year
Yours always lovingly,

My dear Mrs Stanford:
I have been busy today without success in trying to raise some money for you. There seems to be none to be had at first sight, although I may find some at any day.
I am to have a definite answer on Monday from one man & will let you know the result. Next week may possibly develop some one with means, & I shall keep right on trying to find him.
I go to Loma Prieta tomorrow morning but shall be home Sunday night.
Mr Lathrop wished me to tell you that he had called upon the gentleman you spoke to him about, but did not find him in; & that he would call again tomorrow.
With kindest hopes for you good health believe me with love, sincerely yours,
Mrs Leland Stanford
