Mrs. Leland Stanford

Dear Madam and Dear
Friend if I may be allowed to call you so,
for you are the one dear friend of this our
glorious and golden state.

Allow me to congratulate you on the happy
termination of your case in the Supreme
Court of the United States. I shall ever pray for
your success in the grand realization of
your fondest hopes in regard to the future
prosperity of Stanford University, also your
personal happiness.

My father A.L. Downer was personally
acquainted with Leland Stanford, and
received from him regularly for twelve years
a pass from Sacramento to his old home in
Shasta, for which he was very grateful
He is not able to travel now being very feeble
