We passed Mrs. Hearst's
house and a lady joining
us there told us that
Mrs. H. was returning today
to California to live. She
intends to place her home in
the care of an old friend
and dismiss the servants.
Her income had greatly
decreased and her property
[shranks] in value 2
millions and so, she felt
that she should be in
California where her interests
were. She regrets leaving
here as she had intended
remaining until next [June].
