the ranch because of personal discomfort.

The Vineyard Winery, Distillery and Warehousemen can be at meals regularly and promptly, while those in charge of teams or other stock (dairy or other stock) are liable to be late and irregular at meals in consequence of sick animals requiring attention, long distance to be travelled, and many other incidents in connection with the faithful performance of their duties; and in view of their full and willing service out of seasonable hours, some attention to their comfort should be specially given, and will be more than repaid.

This cannot be done in a large "mess" without exciting ill feeling and jealousy, contrary to the interests of ranch work.

For these and many other reasons, considered solely with a view to promote the best interests of the ranch, he declines to close the boarding house in question; and if it must be closed, he begs that some one be designated to relieve him, and he tenders his resignation.

Mr. Copeland desires me to add that it does not seem just or proper to ask one to assume responsibility without corresponding authority - and further, that if relieved of responsibility for the conduct of farmwork, he will carry out to the letter any orders Mrs. Stanford may give.
