This note is probably from 1887 as General Sheridan, who is almost certainly "the General", died in 1888 and the next year in which Feb. 23 is on Wednesday is 1898, long after Leland Stanford's death in 1893, so Jane Stanford no longer had the home in Washington, where Mrs. Sheridan and Mrs. Grant lived.
