My dear Aunt:

In accordance with the request contained
in your letter of the twenty seventh inst. which I have
been delayed in acknowledging owing to my absence from
Oakland, I have addressed to the Board of Trustees, and
enclose herewith a resignation of my office of Trustee, of
the Leland Stanford Jr. University.

The interest which I have always felt in the University
and in its prosperity and progress makes me regret
that I shall not be permitted to directly aid in the
promotion thereof, but I regret very much more the
misapprehension of my acts and motives which has
occasioned the expressions set forth in your letter
and the recent change of your feelings towards me,
which now seems to constitute a barrier to the exercise
of the sincere and loyal devotion which I have always
felt and shown to you and your interests.

As I accepted the position of Trustee of the
Leland Stanford Jr. Kingergarten Trust, at your request,
