us all in His Keeping--
We have arrived here
amide {sic} the bitterest
political campaign
that has disturbed Cal
for years my private
opinions I think had
better not be expressed
but with all the charmes {sic}
of home and its sacred
associations I wish we
could have been delayed
somewhere until after
the election - there is no
peace or rest for Mr Stanford
and I am fearing the
few weeks of agitation
and excitement will
undo all the gain of the
summer's rest. I feel so
utterly powerless to make
things different.

How thankful you should
both feel that you are
free hand heart and
foot from the Institution
on the cor of 4th and
Townsend St. It may
be rank treason to think
and say this but the
women of the nineteenth
century are on a higher
pinecal [sic] than ever before
and freedom of speech
is allowed us. And ere
long we shall have the
right to vote.
