Dear Dr. Jordan;-

I have just received your letter informing me of the gift of the wood-carvings, dumb-bell, and music-sheets. I have written to Father Casanova thanking him for the same. It is quite an acquisition to the things he has already presented to me for the Museum.

I have been wishing for a good opportunity to write a lengthy letter to you and Mrs. Jordan. Dear Mrs. Jordan's letter to me was intensely interesting, so original and so like her dear self. It afforded me great pleasure to

read it.

I am not in a condition of mind to write to-day about various things connected with the University. The atmosphere is so filled with noxious elements that do not contribute to ennobling thoughts.

I sometimes sit for a few moments, close my eyes, and go back to dear Palo Alto; and I wonder if it is possible that one person can be so transformed as I have been. When there my sole thought was the University and it gave me so much pleasure to be doing the work I did. Here I am doing another kind of work, which does not seem to be at all self-satisfying.

I am glad to know that you all keep well and are happy. I can say with truth and sincerity that I envy you and Mrs. Jordan the sweet privilege you have of breathing the air of Palo Alto and looking at its blue sky and its mountains.

I remember, the last evening I spent at Escondite Cottage. You said it was so beautiful to get up in the morning and find the mountains still there. I pine to take my favorite drive over the foot-hills back of your house.

Remember me very kindly to Mrs. Richardson. How sweet and lovely it was in her to take the position she did at a time when we were so in need of help.

I am very thankful to be able to say that Mr. Stanford is unusually well; far better
