San Francisco, Cal., March 3rd, 1905.

Pres. David Starr Jordan,
Leland Stanford Jr. University,
Stanford University, Cal.

My dear Dr. Jordan:

"The death of Mrs. Stanford is a sad shock to us all. I
most fervently hope that investigation will prove that death
was due to natural causes. I am most unwilling that your
University shall be obliged to hand down through the ages the
tradition of such an infamous and inhuman act. There has
been so much nobleness, unselfishness and self-sacrifice
connected with the planting and blossoming of the University
that it grieves me deeply to feel that its history is to be
marred by so dark a tragedy. I express to you and to the
University my deep sympathy."

Yours sincerely,

F. H. Wheelan.
