I have not had the pleasure of much
personal inter course with you, but what
I had, at sundry times, in Company
with my brother-in-law Senator
Stewart impressed me most favorably
in your behalf; not that I suppose
you either needed or especially cared
for it --

When you had the manhood, and
the States manship, to vote for Col
Lamar's confirmation as Justice
of the Supreme Court, I in common
with many of his friends thought, and
still think that it was an exhibition
