Gov Leland Stanford My Dear Sir Perhaps this is an appropriate time for those who appreciate the great and good work you have done for this Coast. To speak for myself and my family I can truly say that we fully appreciate the great labor of connecting this Coast with the rest of this [Continent?] by iron and steel ways thereby giving us not only rapid and cheap but [luxurious?] transportation. This in itself would be a lasting

monument to anyone. You have a chain upon us all and especially upon the soldiers by your energetic and patriotic action as the Gov. of this state in the [crisis?] of our Republic during the late [rebellions?]. You will always be remembered as [one?] of the great "War Governors". You have also [led?] in developing the [viticultural?] interests of the state and also the [?] growing interests of the Coast. In both of these branches of agriculture you have been a public benefactor. All these would fill and heap up the [measure?] of any life, but

I believe that your latest work the "Leland Stanford Jr. University" will prove the crowning work of your life if not of the age. It will prove of incalculable benefit to the youth now born and to untold generations yet unborn. For all these nobler works you are entitled to our gratitude and love, and I feel sure that the people of this Coast feel as I do and that at the fitting time, they will [speak?] in [tones?] that cannot be misunderstood
