Pres D S Jordan
My Dear Doctor
I see in the papers that Professor Swaine is about to leave us. I am sorry for this as I have an impression that he is especially suited to act with you as your assistant in your duties as President. If you approve I would be willing to offer him the position of Vice President or Assistant to the President. For some time I have been thinking that on my return to California I would consult with you in regard to an assistant and the title be ought to receive. It seems to me that whoever represents

you during your absence ought to have a title for his authority.
The probability are that we shall be able to have Washington sometime during the coming week as I think the Senate will adjourn about that time.
Yours Very Truly
