Dear Mother and Daddy,

I went to my first music lesson today, and I really had quite and good one, after all I had forgotten over Christmas. I just played one piece most of the time, but we really went over it; so that now I ought to know just exactly how it should be played. He certainly is a thorough, meticulous, but at the same time a very interesting music teacher; I don't see how anyone could possibly be any better. Jim Kessler took me over to his house. He just happened to drive by when I was walking up the street, and he had just gotten a new car and undoubtedly wanted to show it off, and he did - I was extremely impressed. It was a new black Oldsmobile. He said that Mr. and Mrs. Buckler had been up here a few days ago.

Not very much has happened since I last wrote. I have just been studying and going to class and practicing. I decided to take tennis again, and they told me I would have to take advanced tennis, but everyone in the class is so much better than I, that I feel horribly conspicious. I will never be able to play tennis well with all those good players. I have decided to always take a gym class, because you always need the exercise, and you probably wouldn't get it if you didn't have a class to go to, and besides after you get out of college you always want to know how to do all the different sports, and then your only way to learn is to pay millions to be taught how. It is the only way I found to economise in this school, I might as well take advantage of the opportunity.

We have been thinking of going up to Yosemite week-end after next. Every week-end they make arrangements for about a hundred and twenty Stanford people to go, and we thought we would try and go before there were a lot of tests coming up - although I am having one next week and a book report due the next Friday -

I shouldn't have too much to do that week-end. I am now reading a book about John C. Calhoun for my book report, he certainly seems to be an interesting person. I am as yet not exactly certain about the skiing business, but if things work out, we would like to go. Illie, Ruth and I would be going, and also some other girls in the house to say nothing of all the other people we would know if there are going to be a hundred and twenty Stanford people up there. All my bruises from last time are just about all faded out; so I think it is about time I got some more - just so people will recognize that I am a seasoned skier.

I am going to the symphony with Jack tonight. He and his brother have season ticket between them for it, and I guess it was Jack's turn this week. I have started to knit a pair of socks for him. I said something a long time ago about it when I was knitting daddy's, and he hasn't let me forget it; so I thought I had better start. Art has completely amazed me he called the other night, and practically asked me for enough dates to last the rest of the quarter. I was so taked aback that I didn't have enough time to gracefully refuse all the dates I should have with him - Jack will probably get discouraged and quit taking me out.

The two boxes came. I haven't gotten them yet, but I had noticed that they were in the post office. Thank you very much for sending them to me. I may wear the pink dress tonight. I hate to ask you to send me anything else, but I do need a new check-book, my other one is all used up, and I would appreciate it if you would send me another. After this I shall try and not think of anything else to have you send.

Love to all,

Mary
