Dear Mother and Daddy,

It was awfully hard to start to study on Monday, but I did. I had a test in History the next day, and I just had to study; so I did. The test didn't turn out to be so hard. Thank goodness it was about interesting things; or I don't think I ever could have. So the story about Monday is that I hibernated all day with my notebooks, books and glasses. The test didn't turn out to be so hard and I don't see how I could have done too badly in it; anyway I hope not.

Tuesday I devoted about five hours to practicing the piano. I am really getting the two pieces that Dr. Popper gave me so that I can play them quite well. He said he was going to start me on another one on my next music lesson. I also saw quite a bit of Art on that day. At ten o'clock he asked me for a big date sometime in March. He next called at lunch and said that he was coming over to see me just before dinner, which he did. Then at eight o'clock he called and asked me to go get some coffee at the Cellar with him at ten. That was quite a record for attention, especially for Art.

Wednesday Mary Ellen came over for lunch and we had an awfully nice visit. I really don't get to see her very much now that I never have classes with her anymore. Then I went and played tennis, and saw Jack for about twenty minutes while I ate an orange at the Cellar. After that I went and practiced for about two hours; in fact I got sort of carried away and practiced so long that I was late to dinner. That night I read my law cases and went over to Roble and talked to some Freshman girls. There were about fifteen of them sitting there, none of whom I was very impressed with, but I think I just must have gotten a bad corridor, because as a whole this Freshman class is just darling. Anyway I enjoyed

talking to them. I felt that it was good experience for me.

Thursday I had my music lesson. It turned out to be a very good one - both my pieces are on the finishing stage, and Dr. Popper seems to be quite pleased with the way I had done them. He also gave me a new piece to read. It is a Rhapsody by Brahms which is quite a dramatic piece and sounds quite wonderful when he plays it. Dr. Popper was so cute. I had had to wear a scarf on my head because it was raining and besides my hair was absolutely filthy, and he kept insisting that the reason I wore it was so that he couldn't pull my ears; so he kept pulling the ends of it. It was sort of raining out, and I usually have to walk about a mile across a field to get to his house; so Jack came and found me after my ten o'clock and said that he was going to drive me over because he didn't want me walking around in the rain. He wouldn't even let me insist that I not let him. He took me over and then came and got me in an hour. I was rather flabergasted at this action, but I did think it was awfully nice of him.

Yesterday after classes I walked into Palso Alto and back because I had to go in to get a piece of music, and it was such a nice day that I thought walking would be just right. After I came back, I went straight to the library and started to study my history - I got so interested in it that I forgot about lunch until it was too late; so I just stayed and studied it for the rest of the afternoon. Last night I went to the show with Jack and saw "Angel on My Shoulder", which was an awfully good movie, and then we went to a new little place that has just been opened up, where we met George and Lloyd McGovern and a few other people - naturally we had a very gay time.

That I think just about brings you up to date for a couple of days.

Love to all,

Mary

P.S. I'm very sorry to have kept repeating myself in the first paragraph, but I was listening to some very pretty music on the radio, and I didn't get down to concentrating about this letter for a couple of minutes.

Love,

Mary
