March 4, 1947

Dear Mother and Daddy,

I just got through with my law exam. It really wasn't too bad I guess. We had three questions and two of them I think I got all right. On the third one I'm afraid I must have just talked around the point. I had studied about twelve hours the day before for it. I read a lot of the recently decided cases in the law library because he always takes the test cases from cases that have been decided before, and usually quite recent ones. I was very lucky and just happened to read one that he gave us; so I didn't have to figure out a decision for that one. The other one I felt I got quite well too. Now I won't have to worry about anymore tests before finals which come in about two weeks. But I have a book report still due and a couple of books to read before finals; to say nothing of a piece Dr. Popper wants me to learn before I go home; so I imagine I will have more than enough to keep busy.

Jack asked me if we could drive me home again; so I said that would be fine. Kay Wheeler is going to drive down with us, and maybe also Ruth, depending on whether Jack's brother Bud wants to drive with Jack too. Ruth is going to stay with Kay this time, but I would like to have her come and spend one night with me. We will be driving down on the twenty-first of March. I can't come any earlier because I have a two hour final that morning; however, the final will will be finished at ten; so we will be starting soon after that. We could wait until the next day, but then we would have to miss Anne Carter's wedding, and I just don't want to miss that. It will be sort of a gathering of the clan so to speak, for everyone I know from Stanford will be there. Of course I'd love to have something new to wear expecially since I don't even have anything

left over from last Spring that I could wear. The only thing is that I don't know when I would have time to go shopping unless it was that Saturday morning, and that would be sort of a rush.

Our party on Saturday night was quite a success, or least all of us had a wonderful time. I finally wore that black skirt and white blouce outfit that Margie gave me. The dance started about nine, and everyone appeared looking very skiish - except me, and I couldn't because all my ski clothes were on a model in the hall way. Everyone sat around and ate doughnut holes and drank apple cider. They played all kinds of records, but the most fun ones were sort of jumpy ones where you hop and skip around. I have done them all so many times with Art that it is just wonderful because we both know how and don't get mixed up too much. The only thing wrong was that the floor was terribly slippery, and I kept falling down - I'm sure I must have fallen down at least twenty times during the week-end. In fact I'm getting to be quite an artist at it. The worst time, however, was Sunday morning when I fell up the stairs and broke off all my toes nails in the middle. It was slightly uncomfortable for a few minutes. Needless to say the dance was quite a success, and the only thing that anyone could find wrong with it was that it didn't last long enough. However, I do wish I could go to a formal party just once. I can't think of one I've been too since last spring, and that is quite a record since there are so many formal dances around.

Sunday was a very nice day. I had to get up early to get the house in order after the dance; it was certainly a job. We didn't get finished in time to go to church - it really took us to about noon. At one o'clock Jack and Ralph Ashton came over to take Virginia Walker and me on a picnic. We, Virginia and I, directed them to a place called Woodland

Hollow. It is just a beautiful place, but you have to walk about a mile to get there, and also cross a stream. I have been on a picnic there lots of times. The only thing is that it is situated on a hill with a lot of tall trees around; so while it was a very warm, beautiful day, the sun didn't quite get to this part and it was rather cold. Neither of the boys had a match; so we couldn't build a fire until we waylaid a man riding horseback and got one from him, and in the meantime we froze. Of course Virginia and I would never admit it, but we never heard the last of it from the boys. But they got the fire going and it was perfect. We had a huge lunch that the boys had brought along, supplemented by a few little things Virginia and I thought would add. That included some wonderful marshmallows that we found in a little store in Palo Alto that were home made and without doubt the best I have ever tasted. We also brought them a kite and had it all wrapped up with white tissue paper and blue ribbon. After lunch we tried the kite out, but Ralph got so excited that it broke before it ever got up. We stayed until about five l'clock, and then for dinner we stopped at a drive-in and got some milk and nibbled some more out of our little box. Even with all of that there was enough food left to supply the boys with bread and cheese for the next week.

I guess this is just about the time you are having your bridge party. I know it will be a wonderful party. I'm so glad that you decided to have one. But I do hope that you didn't work too hard and wear yourself out getting it together.

Love to all,

Mary
