Dear Mother and Daddy,

I have just gotten back from a little shopping excersion into Palo Alto. I had to go into to get a shower present for Jackie McCurdy. Sue Riordan is giving a bathroom shower for her next Sunday. Sue was my roommate last Spring quarter, but hasn't been been to school since. I didn't know what to get because I had never been to a bathroom shower before. I finally found an awfully cute water bottle and glass which has a little horse painted on it. It isn't too useful, but it was awfully cute and not very expensive. Jack took me in, and we talked about food all the way; so by the time we finally got in we were so starved we had to go get an icecream cone. I also went to a shower last Thursday for Anne Carter. It was a kitchen shower given by a Patsy Bell and Mary Larkin. I took a little box containing six different little jars of jelly, which she seemed to like very well. It was given at Patsy Bell's sister-in-law's house, which was way up on the hill and only a small dirt road to get there - one way. Anne came the last of anyone, and as Dick was driving off after having dropped her, the car got stalled and he couldn't move it for about an hour and a half while he was in the process of fixing it. We all had to wait around long after the party was over before we could move while he fixed it. We succeeded very well in getting him nervous. Anne went home today to get ready for the wedding; she isn't even going to take her finals or come back to school. Sally was there too; it was the first time in a long time that I had seen her to talk to for quite some time. She asked Art and me to come up to her house on Saturday to go swimming, but I don't think that I'll go because I have too many things to do.

Ther really isn't anything to tell about since Tuesday. I have just been studying and

practicing. I learned quite a bit of my new piece. I hate to say it but my last music lesson didn't go too well. It was sort of a shock because I expected it to go better than usual, but I guess you always get a bad day, and I have had several previous good ones. Jack and Art have continued to come over regularly. Art appeared for a while on Wednesday afternoon, and also took me down to the Cellar for a cup of coffee at ten. Jack came over on Thursday for a little while, and I got his socks back to wash them to set the colors, and I noticed that the top thread had broken; so I started to fix it. I was told that the best way to fix it was to unravel it from the top, and I found that that was entirely the wrong thing to do. They are practically ruined now and I don't know how to fix them. Just one more thing to worry about.

I had better go now and do a little studying before dinner. I am now reading another book for history. This one is about the slave situation in the South during the Cival War years. It is really very interesting; but I'm not reading it too thoroughly because I have to get to some French books which are even more interesting.

Love to all,

Mary
