April 13, ---- (1948?)

Dear Mother and Daddy,

I really meant to write sooner, but I have been frantically reading Shakespeare for a test ?? having there at the end of the week. We have to know the five plays, and I have no idea what will be asked about them. I'm frantic.

We have been having all kinds of troubles with the Phi Delt lately. They live next door. They stole our car last Saturday. The old 1923 Buick that we all hold jointly. They drove it way out and got it up on some deserted little foot bridge that was just barely big enough for the car. Then they took a picture of it and brought it over after they had developed it. We had to decide from the picture where it was. We rushed out and

found it, but there wasn't any possible way to get it down; so we had to wait until the next afternoon when they all went over to the Delt house and got them to help us take it down. By that time the poor little car wasn't working; so they had to toe it home, and then they got some more boys, this time solicited from the Beta house to get it running. I do wish you could see the car - you honestly wouldn't believe it was possible.

Last Saturday afternoon I had to go into town to look for a wedding present for B.J. Jones; so Jack took me in, and at the same time we looked at silver. I hate to tell you, but the only one that both of us liked, and which both of us liked best was King Richard, that is the one with the hollow handle butter spreaders. She knew of course that if we decided on that one we

probably wouldn't get as much silver, but I think we decided that we would rather have less of that pattern, than more of something else. Jack wasn't too mad for Old Master, although I don't think it really makes to much difference to him what I have. But anyway, when the two are both set out together, I like King Richard much better. I also ran across a set of pottery dishes with an ivy pattern that I was simply mad for. It was called California Ivy, and I think must have been one of the ones you told me about.

The package that you forwarded to me was an engagement present from Mrs. Jones. Mary Ellen's aunt. I was certainly surprised, because I didn't expect her to send me anything of course. I was more

surprised because I thought they would be some pills or something uninteresting you were sending me. I only thought that because I have been excited before by mysterious packages that have turned out to be nothing but pills. The present was twolittle Margalinen finger tip towels. I do wish that you had looked at them because they were just adorable. They were called "under the sea" and had litle fishes swimming around embroidered on them. One was done in chartruese and the other in coral.

Last Friday night Jack's older brother was here. I went with both of them to a place on El Camino where a group of students from Stanford put on a gay ninety show every Friday night. It really is an eating place, but they just have this for a floor show after dinner.

Frank was awfully nice and very easy to talk to. I was quite impressed and I know you would have liked him too.

On Saturday night, quite a few of the older Delts that Jack knows best got together for a little party. It was a very informal affair, and while it was a lot of fun, it wasn't too exciting. I am sure you will be most happy to know that I was in bed both nights by at least twelve-thirty.

It seems to me now that I am in a position to complain of lack of letter writing. ah ha!

Well I must get back to Richard II. I do wish I didn't have any studying to do all quarter except study Shakespeare. I didn't realize it could be so enjoyable.

Love to all,

Mary~
