Dear Mother and Daddy,

I just received your box and I couldn't wait to write you and thank you for it. The outfit is just perfect. I put it on and paraded up and down the halls with it on. Every one liked it a lot even though we couldn't quite make it out at first. It's wonderful for wear up her, but I think that I will save it for this winter. It is a little hot to wear it now, but I probably will appear with it on some hot day just because I can't wait to wear it.

I had a super birthday, at least as super as it could be away from home. Six of the girls, Sally Sutch and Teachout, Kay, Mary Pat, Phyllis Sutherland, and Joanne Whittier, gave me the biggest angel food cake you ever saw; it was red and white (for Stanford colors) and had "Happy Birthday Mary" on it. It was very good and tasted wonderful. They also had two poems that Sally Sutch [wrote?] for and about me. Later on last night the corridor gave me a spread of ice cream and another angel food cake. This cake had candles that I blew out all at once, a feat I don't know when I've ever accomplished.

It's been awfully funny about my school work. The things that I did worst at Marlborough I'm doing best in here, and the opposite. My worst subject has been Western Civilization, and my nest have been French and Physical Sciences. I just got back a very good Phys. Sci. paper the other day and one last week in French. I think the trouble with my Wester Civ. is that it is still a little deep for me, but it started out this way at Marlborough, and so I know that it will end up O.K. here if I study hard.

I've been learning a new piece. It is another Beethhoven sonata. It's very pretty but long. I hope that I can play it for you when you come up. I have to go and practice it now.

Thank you again for the wonderful presents. I think I forgot to say something about the shoe bag and the clothes bag, but I'm certainly glad that you sent them, and I've already got them fixed.

Love to all, Mary
