November 2, 1944

Dear Mother and Daddy,

Even though it is November 2 I certainly didn't forget daddy's birthday on the 31st. I tried and tried to think of something to get him or do for him, but I couldn't. I thought of buying a joke book, but I couldn't get the one I wanted, and then I decided to write him a poem but I couldn't get inspired; so I'm still rather out on the limb, but I'll think of something yet.

I just got back from a meeting of young Republicans which I found very interesting but sometimes I'm beginning to wonder if it wouldn't be better to keep Roosevelt after all. At least we know what to expect from him and that he isn't an isolationist, which is certainly more than you can say for Dewey, but then again sometimes I think almost anything would be better than Roosevelt. I'm awfully glad really that I don't have to vote because I really couldn't decide whether - as it said in

Life to hold my nose and vote for Roosevelt or close my eyes and vote for Dewey. I've really been getting awfully political lately. Last night I went to a hot debate concerning the election and of course I sat on the Republican side and this morning I had a long argument about it; so I guess that I really had rather close my eyes to vote, even though I know that Dewey's election will bring a divided Congress which would be very bad in war time, but enough of my political views.

I havn't heard what to do about the formal. This Saturday will be my only chance to shop and if I do buy one up here you'll have to put the money in the bank for it.

There really isn't much more to say except to tell you that I got a perfect paper in physical science but unfortunately it was a quiz that didn't amount to very much.

Love to all, Mary -
