Dear Mother and Daddy,

Today has been the most beautiful day you can imagine. It was very bright and clear and the sun was hot. The lake in back of Roble is practically filled now and it will be open for swimming and canoeing in about a week. Every one has been going to lie on the boathouse and do homework. Sometimes you'er very successful doing homework, but other times you'er not. I was up there this afternoon doing my Spanish. It was certainly lovely - It's warm enough at night now so that you don't even have to wear a coat. Last Saturday I was at the boathouse too. That was the first time I was up there. Sally and I took some pictures with my camera. I wondered if you could get any would you send me some colored film for the camera. Everything is green and in bloom now and there are some of the most beautiful scenes around here that I would love to take some pretty pictures

of them. Also would you mind sending me my bathing suit and my three cotton dresses. I'll probably get more good out of them now than I would later on.

I got two tests back today. A history test and a French test. I got B's on both of them. I certainly didn't expect anything more in Civ. and was very pleased that I got what I did, but I studied twelve hours for my French test and I've never studied so long for anything before. I'd liked to have gotten an A in something this quarter, but I guess I won't be able to. What brought my grade down was a sight translation and I couldn't have studied for that, so I guess I couldn't help it. I'm awfully afraid I'm going to get a D in Physical Science.

I had a music lesson today and Mrs. Belenky entertained me with telling me of her pet white rat who adored vanila ice cream and died of heart trouble. During the last two weeks of his life it seems that he was in such a

delicate condition that he could eat nothing but vanila ice cream. He also had eyes like big amber colored viteman pills. She told me also that his fur was very well kept, being combed + brushed once a day - also bathed. He must have been quite a rat. My music lesson today was better than usual, and I'm finally learning a piece by memory. It's just a Chopin etude and isn't too very interesting, but at least its something.

Sally Teachout's sister has come to visit Sally for a while and I went to church with them yesterday.

I had quite a situation with Bob and George this weekend. I went out with George both Friday and Saturday nights, and was with Bob Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday night I went with George to another Tyler dance which again consisted mostly of ping pong. For about four weeks now Sally and I have been having to play a ping pong match, but we never have

played it. And every Tyler dance we go to on Friday, we insist that we have to practice for our match which never occurs. I'm afraid that the boys are beginning to wonder a little. They probably think that we'er just trying to get away from them. Naturally George arrived to pick me up about an hour late, but I'm beginning to expect that now. It seems that this time he had hitchhiked to San Jose to get back a formal shirt that someone from there had borrowed. He and all his friends have been after me to give him a picture for a long time now. So I guess that I'll have to give him a snapshot or something. Saturday afternoon when I was sitting at the boathouse on the lake writing Ottilie a letter and doing my French, Bob arrived with Jim and a couple of other med. students. It was a little hard on Sally because two other boys who are crazy about her were there too and they didn't exactly appreciate Jim's presence, so they came and threw

Sally in the lake. They stayed until we had to go into dinner and I played bridge with them and I felt especially good because I made a grand slam while playing bridge with three med. students. After coming home I was in a little hurry because I had to be ready to go out with George at seven and I hadn't pressed my black net formal. I finally made it all right since George was about fifteen minutes late. We ate dinner at a most wonderful place and I had the most wonderful dinner that I've had in a long time. We ate with three other couples - but I don't think you know any of them. Afterwards we came home and put on our formals - George was late again - this time because every one had already left and borrowed both his evening ties, but we finally arrived at the dance and had a wonderful time. On Sunday, after I had spent a couple of hours at the Civ. library reading the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, Bob and Jim arrived and walked us into Palo Alto
