Dear Mother and Daddy,

Well we drew today for our rooms for next fall and I was anything but lucky - I won't get to live in any of the places I want to live, but then I've been so lucky lately and you can't be lucky forever. So I guess its about time I gave my luck to someone else. I'll get to live with Sally and Ruth and they'er the ones I really wanted to live with anyway, so it won't be so bad. And I think I can move into the D.G. house after a quarter anyway. I'm glad to know that I could have pledged a sorority if they had had them. It was rather exciting at the end of last week - almost like rushing. The Thetas had me to dinner on Sunday night and I no sooner got home than two D.G.'s came over to "make sure we knew that they wanted us in their house" as if we didn't. They even said they wished they could pledge us; anyway they certainly made it known that they wanted us, and today I went up to the

Kappa house for lunch. I'm luckier than most girls because I knew that the houses wanted me and I'm afraid that the sorority girls aren't going to be too happy about some of the girls that they get to live with them and they probably won't be too nice to them. Anyway I'll get where I want and what's more important where I'm wanted after a while and in the meantime I can be with Sally and Ruth and we can all move into the D.G. house together. I'm a lot better off than some girls who are going up to houses where they won't be well recieved - especially jewish girls, all the sorority girls will probably die at having one in their house and you can't blame them, I would absolutely refuse to room with one unless she were exceptional. There are going to be some more vacancies at the end of fall quarter so maybe we can move in then, let's hope so.

Besides getting a high number I've been awfully lucky - I got an A in my Sociology test and a B in my Spanish test. Elizabeth Dickson asked me up to the Kappa house

for lunch. She's just a wonderful girl - she's a senoir now and used to go to Marborough although she graduated from there before I went. I got two letters, one from George, and one from Peter Boyes; that's quite some thing for me the same day. As soon as George got to San Diego he came down with scarlet fever and has been in the hospital the whole time he's been there. Peter's downcast because he has had only twenty five missions. I also won my tennis match.

I had the most wonderful time last week-end. I went up to San Francisco with Bob and some other people to see The Red Mill. We had dinner at a place called Julius' Castle and never in my life have I had such a divine dinner. They had the most wonderful onion soup you have ever tasted with a piece of toasted brown bread with melted cheese soaked in it; and they had ravioli and spagetti all mixed up, some of the ravioli and meat and some

had spinach in them; there were also some French pancakes that literally melted in your mouth. That dinner certainly had drastic results now though and I have since then put a little sign on my door telling me that I'm not going to eat rolls or desert and everyday that I obey my little sign I get a gold star. Unfortunately I only have one gold star on it so far and I can't put one on tonight either. "The Red Mill" was just a darling operetta and I certainly hope that you and daddy have a chance to see it - you must try.

Sunday I went out in the afternoon with Bob and Bud Speigl - the two most wonderful boys in the 2ed year med. class. That was really an accomplishment. There are not many of the best sorority girls that can boast of that and here I'm only a lowly little Freshman - well, well.

Love to all, Mary

P.S. Thank you daddy for getting the pictures for me and please don't worry about getting any more. I'm now carefully distributing them. Love u.
