Dear Mother and Daddy,

I just found out what I got on my Sociology test. I just missed getting an A by one point. That's the second time that has happened and to say the least its a little discouraging. The only comforting thing is that for the final grade they ad up all your points that you got on your tests and average a final grade so that maybe in the end I can get a fairly good grade since all my test grades have been fairly high; but I want an A and its so discouraging to always just keep missing it. I don't know what I did on my Political Science test but when I finished writing it I didn't feel as though I had failed it like I did before, so maybe it won't be so bad anyway I'm sure it couldn't possibly be as bad as the last one. The paper I had to do for that class was the most terrible one I have ever in my life had to write. You had to take the New York Times for six weeks - only I didn't

take it - I used some one elses. All the material in the paper had to be taken from the New York Times in that six weeks and you had to write about what happened to a certain country in that time. I took France - but it would have been much easier to write about what didn't happen in the six weeks then I could have written a simple - half-page paper. Just because I had to write about what happened - everything had to happen - I don't think it was quite fair.

Last week-end was certainly nice - especially after the terrible week Friday after I turned in my paper I just fell down on my bed an stayed there. On Saturday I went into Palo Alto to shop with Ruth, but I didn't get anything except some hair ribbons - I didn't need any thing. I came back and got ready to go to San Francisco. We went quite early and ate at Omar K Ayams (or however you spell it) anyway it was a very divine place to eat - especially for desert - the

waiters were awfully funny too - we nearly died laughing at all the remarks ours made - he kept speaking to us in different languages. I'm usually very good about eating during the week, but on the week-ends I seem to loose my whole purposes. Mother I've decided this summer we are going to solve the problem once and for all.

The "Desert Song" was really about the best light opera I've ever seen - The costumes, scenery, and songs were all just absolutely wonderful; the only thing wrong was that the leading man was so plump that he had trouble jumping over the railing. He nearly broke it when he tried - so he had to go around - it was awfully funny. I hope you don't think that every time I go to San Francisco I have to spend the night some where. I only did that when we all went to the dance - We usually get out of the theater about eleven and it doesn't take very long to get home.

and I and Sally Teachout and another med. student all went on a little picnic. We went up by a little stream, and it was awfully nice except that there was quite a bit of poison oak around, but I didn't get any. We had to build a little fire and I insisted that the best fire wood was still in the trees - so I climbed up one to break off some branches and threw them down - only one of them I threw down hit Bob right in the eye and cut him both above and below it. I'm afraid it hurt it because he could see out of it for quite a while, but it turned out all right. I was afraid though that I had hurt him. I'm certainly glad nothing happened. The only thing is he will probably have a black eye from it and I shall be blamed for giving him the black eye, dear-me I'll never live it down.

I'm afraid I must stop writing now because I'm writing at the library and I only brought two sheets of paper to write on - anyway, I must start studying my Political Science.

Love to all, Mary -
