Dear Mother and Daddy,

The days have certainly flown by. I never realized it has been four days since I've written. It out to be Tuesday instead of Thursday. I don't know what I'll do if the whole fall does the same.

Last Tuesday I went to see Mrs. Belenky. Every thing well, in fact much better than I expected. It seems that she gave me an extra long lesson over the summer, secretly hoping that I'd do half of it - which I did so she was pleased. I saw her baby and it is the funniest thing I have almost ever seen. I was so surprised I nearly jumped out of my skin. I expected to see a regular, ordinary child, but it looks mongolian and not at all like anything I'd have expected. Anyway it really is awfully cute. Mrs. Belenky is just a scream about - she got very disgusted because he wouldn't burp after its bottle.

Yesterday I went on a Paleontology field trip. It was so interesting - we hunted for fossils and I found some that the professor liked very well one especially which for some reason never got home. He was quite disturbed at me when he found out this morning, but it wasn't my fault. It was a clam and it showed some dention that he particularly liked.I also found some ancient marine snails. We went to a beach about twenty miles north of Santa Cruz. It took us about two hours to get there, and going we took a long and extremely winding road; and I got car sick; but after we got there I was O.K. We ate lunch on the beach. It was a rather short level beach and then an abrupt cliff with all these old marine fossils dripping out of the cliff in layers. It wasn't very hard to get them out; you just had to chipp a little and the professor helped me a little, so I wouldn't

them. It really was so much fun and very interesting. This morning in class we cleaned them and classified them. The paleontology professor is absolutely wonderful and the class is very nice because there are only seven in the class. They are all very smart and I know I'll get a horrible grade, but I'm still awfully glad I'm taking it.

I've been doing quite well in Spanish too. Yesterday in class the professor said I showed a very fine un derstanding of the material; so I walked in the clouds for the rest of the day. I like my German a lot too. I really don't know much about Political Science because I havn't done too much with it, but I must start right away because we are having a test next Wednesday.

We finally got our room all filled up and it really looks quite nice. I'm not using my bedspread but I am using everything else. We have a lovely window that

opens in front and we are forever leaning out of the window talking with every one that walks down the street. Ruth has a telescope which helps no end too, because then we can tell who is coming from afar.

I was so glad to hear that the maid had arrived and was at least doing some work. I certainly hope she works out O.K. and that you don't have too much trouble understanding her.

Love to all, Mary.

P.S. Mother, you don't really need to finish my [boduce], but if you can find time I'd love to have you. I had intended to make the collar smaller, its much to large as it is. I think that an inch off would be enough.

Love, Mary -
