going the rounds. They are all so pleasant and want to become personally acquainted with all the students; and when you consider that there are over five-hundred you would not blame them if they did not care about it. Their homes are all very pretty and cosy.

Our Mr. and Mrs. Howard assisted Professor Howard (History) and Professor Griffin who live in the same house. Professor Griffin has travelled a great deal and he had a large table covered with European scenes. Then you have opportunity of seing the Eucina students, and how they conduct themselves, etc. Professor Griffin is one of the kindest of men and is so interesting in German as he has seen all the places that we are now reading of in Heine's travels and he illustrates his talks with photgraphic views. Professor Howard, though he strikes terror to this classes in his expectations in regard to their knowledge of the ancients, is very pleasant out of class. In fact they are all so pleasant that I would not cary to imply, eve, that any were not. I shall be thrown with some more than others and mean to cultivate them as it rather helps me to personally know my teachers.

This morning we went to the Palot Alto horse farm and there saw Arion who has made the best two year old record in the world and

is worth $125,000, perhaps more than any other horse in the world. Advertiser is the best built horse in the world. Suno is a five-year old that has made a record of 2.08 1/2 and Palo Alto a nine year old whose record is 2.08 3/4. Bellbird, Electricity, and others have distinguished themselves and there are many other beauties who are cleaned and groomed more carefully than people are cared for.

Then we visited the colt kindergarten awhile, saw some of the horses trot. The Jockeys live on the farm and the grounds are swept and cleaned by Chinamen who also live there, and a night school is kept up for them.

It was a lovely morning, too warm for wraps, and we thought of you having snow perhaps at home. The weather is just such as we left in Iowa in September.

Today we have been having our cook stove fixed, and in consequence we had a cold lunch and took dinner at Encina Hall. We had dinner at five and the boys at six. Of course we only took one quarter of their dining room, but some of them would have been compelled to wait, so the steward had them all wait. They looked at us from over the banisters into the large windows that look on the

hall and stood all around every where we came out. Many of them are nice boys and those who are not are more silly and young that anything else.

Oh, one of them was very good to me this evening. He owed one of the girls a philopena and came over and paid it with a box of candy and sent me up a box with her. He is one of the boys who went with us to Mayfield and is a young boy, tell Mama; too young for it to mean anything in the giving or acceptance. His name is Howard Trumbo and he is from Salt Lake City and has lost one hand and wears an artificial one with a glove on it the same as Mr. Hunter, only Trumbo's is less noticeable.

Clara Avery was the girl who won the philopena and we gathered in her room around the table, some eight or tengirls, and devoured it and toasted Mr. Trumbo. Minnie has a bad headache and so went to bed instead of eating and is now in bed as I write. Five of the girls were arrayed in ghost-like masques and parading around; but as I was helping Miss Dickenson get some beef tea and medicine for Minnie, I did not do so.

Last Sunday we went over into the fields where Mr. and Mrs. Howard live and took supper with them. We all got supper and enjoyed it.

They only have two rooms there so live in rather close quarters, but other cottages are going up and they expect to have one of them which will be ready in two or three months.

You see I can write a volume on the giddy things I do, whereas a page or less would tell that I studied and recited from Monday morning till Friday noon and then got three lessons before Monday again.

A Mr. Daniell from San Francisco is coming down from there to give some twenty of us girls an hour drill once a week in chorus singing and voice use. He charges but 25C a lesson. Private lessons are $2.50 for half hour and $5.00 for an hour lesson, but arrangements can be made for classes of two, three or four, for perhaps $1.00 a lesson of an hour length. I think he would be a good one to take of as he does not claim or care to make opera singers. There is a lady who is going to give elocution also and her class prices are 50C for an hour lesson. I may take of her and the chorus singing lesson, but can't tell till I see the lady. A gentleman came down and lectured on elecution but he was almost hooted out of the school.

At the close of the lecture he asked those who wished to join the class to please sign their names and he had quite a wonderful list, as a number of boys went up and signed.

Well, I must to bed. With best love to my young, big sister and my mother, whose letters are so welcoming, I am your loving

Roble Hall December 2, 1891

Dear Papa:

Your letter was received this evening and I thank you very much for being so generous. It was more because I was going down to San Jose that I wanted to money because I am expecting to have to get some books before I go. I don't think that I shall have to spend much while here, though, and shall not need books after these until Spring. At least I hope so.

We go to San Jose Wednesday at four o'clock and return Monday morning. I am so anxious. Elsie Shelley is an English girl and they live in
